The P1 expands the number of Sony Ericsson phones based on Symbian OS v9.1 and UIQ 3.0 to four, increasing the potential market for UIQ 3-based applications, and includes over 30 third-party applications embedded on the smartphone or as Try & Buy versions. Looking something like the love child of an OQO and an HTC Tilt, Sharp-Willcom’s new D4 WS016SH UMPC is apparently the first of its type to have the new Atom Centrino fizzing away inside. That 1.3GHz Atom Z520 is matched with a five-inch LED back-lit 1024 x 600 touchscreen, 1GB of memory, a 40GB drive, 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. If that sounds like a lot in a tiny package then you’ll like this: this Japan-only computer also runs Windows Vista Home Premium. The i-mate 9502 Ultimate packs pretty much every feature we have ever seen in a smartphone — and a whole bunch more — including full HSDPA access. A word of caution here: with full HSDPA, Telstra will advertise this phone’s network speed at a maximum of 7.2Mbps download and 1.9Mbps upload, but don’t expect to get anywhere near these speeds.One feature of the 9502 that i-mate spent considerable time promoting is security — the 9502 will ask you for a pin code every time you turn it on — a useful but hardly unique feature.
The device is bigger than a Blackjack (review), even with the extended battery, but not to the point that I would dismiss it as my everyday phone. It is more attractive than any sliding-keyboard smartphones out there. Read more… »
